“You have cancer” are, perhaps, three of the most dreaded words that one can ever hear. This is true not only because cancer can be so devastating in and of itself, but because almost everyone knows or has seen the extent to which people’s bodies become ravaged while undergoing chemotherapy. More than 40% of people receiving chemotherapy die from malnutrition and more than 10% die from overwhelming infections. They do not die from the cancer but rather from the side effects of chemotherapy. What if those side effects could be greatly minimized?
Well, they can! And here’s how!

Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT) is a modality for the administration of low dose chemotherapy that has been in use since the mid 1930s.

How does IPT work?

Cancer cells, unlike other cells in human beings are anaerobic. That means they can not use oxygen when they metabolize glucose (burn sugar) for energy. A healthy, oxygen burning cell can produce 38 ATPs (energy packets) from one molecule of glucose and one molecule of oxygen. A cancer cell can only produce 2 ATPs from one molecule of glucose in the absence of oxygen. Obviously then, cancer cells are very inefficient at producing energy. As a consequence, they need 19 times more sugar (glucose) than non-cancerous cells.

In order for any cell to absorb sugar, insulin is required. Insulin is the “key” that opens the “lock” on the cell to allow sugar to pass through. The “locks” on the cell surface are called insulin receptors. Cancer cells have developed a very simple but effective strategy which allows them to get more of the available sugar than their neighbors, the non-cancerous cells. They simply have many more insulin receptors than non-cancerous cells! Having many more receptors, cancer cells are able to bind and use more of the available insulin than all the other cells. So whether one eats a banana or a candy bar, the cancer is fed first and the rest of the cells get the “leftovers”.

This knowledge can be used to target the cancer cell with cytotoxic agents (chemotherapy). Kind of like, a “smart bomb”. By administering small amounts of insulin, it is possible to “select” the cancer cells from amongst all the other cells in the body because they bind the insulin much more quickly. There are a multitude of effects upon cells when insulin binds to them and one of these effects is that the cells become more permeable (creating openings). Once the cancer cells have been targeted by the insulin to “open their doors”, small amounts of the appropriate chemotherapeutic drugs can be administered. This is usually from 5% to 10% of the standard dose. Much of what is administered becomes absorbed into the cancer cells (permeable) and not the normal cells (relatively “hard”). IPT is able, therefore, to take advantage of the powerful cytotoxic (cell-killing) effects of standard chemotherapy without having to use high doses.

Because the dosing is low, side effects are minimized and the treatments can be given more frequently giving cancer cells less time to become resistant to the drugs.

A useful metaphor:

A conventional oncologist finds out that there is a burglar in the kitchen, so he throws a hand grenade into the kitchen.

IPT trained physicians find out that there is a burglar in the kitchen, inject some poison into a hungry mosquito and then send it into the kitchen. They feel very strongly that it is important to keep the kitchen intact. They also want to know that even if the burglar escaped through an open window, having been bitten by the mosquito, he will not survive very long.

What Drugs or Protocols are used with IPT?

IPT physicians maintain membership in professional societies, attend conferences, read journals and communicate with colleagues in order to maintain a current knowledge base regarding all new drugs and protocols being used in the conventional treatment of cancer. This is done so that IPT can continue to be as effective as possible by using the best of standard therapies in a rational manner.

In this regard, the Hippocratic Oath is taken very seriously.
“Primum non nocere” or “First, do no harm”.

If the immune system is significantly harmed while attempting to destroy the cancer, it would be a great and perhaps fatal, disservice to the patient. For it is the immune system which keeps us clean, renewed and protected from infections, toxins and cancer.

And there is a cure for cancer; it is called a healthy immune system!

Cancer cells have also developed another strategy to survive that IPT uses to its’ advantage. Not only are there many more insulin receptors on cancer cells but there are also many more ‘growth hormone’ receptors, called IGF-1 and IGF-2. The acronym IGF stands for Insulin-like Growth Factor and therefore insulin can also bind to the IGF receptors. When these receptors are stimulated, cells are triggered to begin the process of dividing. Since many chemotherapeutic drugs are designed to kill cells which are actively dividing, stimulating the cancer cells to divide just before giving the chemotherapy actually increases the number of cancer cells that will be killed during the IPT treatment.

So, it becomes clear that IPT kills cancer by using the same strategies that cancer uses to kill people.

Not only are we obsessed with eating and drinking it, we supplement non-protein foods such as fruit with protein powders. Considered to be the most fundamental and sacred of all nutrients, the Dutch chemist Gerhard Mulder (1839) upon discovering these nitrogen-containing substances used the Greek word proteios (“the first quality”) to name them proteins. Cultural bias powerfully influenced the “science” of nutrition from the onset.

A German scientist, Carl Voit (1831-1908) in spite of having discovered that humans needed only 48.5 grams of protein per day proclaimed that good health required 118 grams per day.

One of his protégés, W.O. Atwater (1844-1907) organized the first nutritional research laboratory at the USDA and defined the caloric equivalence of proteins (4 cal/gm), carbohydrates (4 cal/gm) and fats (8.9 cal/gm). As director of the USDA, he recommended 125 grams of protein per day.

The burgeoning “science” of nutrition, so deeply rooted in cultural elitism, considered it factual that the lower classes were lazy and less intelligent and that these “deficient qualities” were due to a lack of protein in their diet. If you were rich, you ate meat and if you were poor, you ate plants.

Meat and dairy products were/are thought to be synonymous with protein. This is a myth! For example, the percentage of calories from protein in asparagus is 32%; broccoli, 36%; kale 40%; lean beef, 32%; pork chops 23%.

In 1982, Francis Lappe issued an almost completely new 10th anniversary edition of her very influential book, Diet for a Small Planet. This book had been responsible, in large part for perpetuating the myth that it is extremely difficult to obtain high quality protein from plants alone. In previous editions she stated that in order to get “complete protein” from plants, one had to carefully choose and combine specific types of plants. In her 10th edition, with regards to obtaining high quality protein from plants she concluded, “With a healthy, varied diet, concern about protein complementarity is not necessary…if people are getting enough calories, they are virtually certain of getting enough protein.”

Proteins are chains of amino acids and there are hundreds of thousands of different kinds of proteins, including enzymes, hormones, structural tissues, and transport molecules. Only eight amino acids are considered “essential” that is we must obtain them through diet. All other proteins can be synthesized from those eight.

The question arises, “how much protein do we need”? In order to answer that without bias, let’s first enquire of Mother Nature. The most rapid growth spurt in the life of a mammal occurs just after birth. In order that these infants’ bodies can double and triple, nature provides each species with a unique formula, called milk. Rats have 49% protein in their milk, cats 40%, cows 15% and we humans, the lowest at 5%!

The World Health Organization, the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Research Council say that at the very maximum we need only 8% of our calories to be protein. Considering that after weaning, we need at most 8% of our calories to be protein, it is clear that plants can easily satisfy those requirements for humans.

What happens to excess protein? Unlike carbohydrates, protein can not be stored and so what the kidneys fail to eliminate is picked up by the lymphatic system. Excess protein results in osteoporosis, cancer, and kidney disease.

This is only true for protein of animal origin. Plant protein does not have these dire consequences for humans. The animal fat associated with animal protein such as that found in meat, milk and eggs compounds the deleterious effects of animal protein resulting in heart disease and cerebral vascular disease.

The volumes of peer reviewed articles in highly respected scientific journals which attest to these statements are overwhelming. “Less is more” !

Just as we don’t walk down the street and “catch” health; neither do we walk down the street and “catch” diseases. We earn either health or disease by how we live our lives. One person sneezes in a room with his mouth uncovered and only 3 of the 10 people in that room get sick. Why? With the exception of genetic conditions, which account for less than 3% of illnesses, all other conditions are earned. What “runs” in families are eating habits and life styles. One hundred years ago, 0.5% of Americans got cancer. Almost 50% of Americans alive today, will get cancer in their lifetimes. Where is the genetics in that?

Health is best defined as the ‘optimal functioning of an organism’. We really have no idea what ‘optimal functioning’ of human beings might “look like” because we live in a society where the majority of people are sickly. Our standard of “health” is really a standard of varying degrees of sickness. We regard most people as ‘well’ if they can attend to their survival needs. In fact, most people define health as “the absence of disease”, which is tantamount to defining “light” as the “absence of darkness”.

Nature heals! You cannot purchase a cure but you can earn your health. A surgeon can only bring two edges of skin together from a laceration and suture them, but nature will restore the viability and integrity of the skin. Only by living according the natural laws which define our biology do we have a chance at being restored to health. Natural laws are non-negotiable. Apples seeds never yield orange trees.

The first step in healing is to stop causing disease. This can only be accomplished by simultaneously ceasing to ingest unwholesome foods and drinks while cleaning out poisonous waste from the body. There are five waste removal systems in our bodies: bowels, kidneys, skin, lungs, and lymph. The human colon is approximately five feet in length and one of its functions is to reabsorb water. Therefore, if you are not defecating five feet of waste daily, you are retaining a substance so toxic that if one drop were to enter your blood stream you would become extremely ill and possibly die. When you continually reabsorb the water of the retained feces, toxins are also absorbed into the blood. Once toxins reach the blood, it is called “toxemia”. This small amount of continual toxemia is part of what keeps the whole body in an underlying inflammatory state which is the basic pathology of all illnesses.

Keep in mind that the immune system has two broad functions and can therefore, be classified as the department of defense and the department of maintenance. If the immune system is overwhelmed by maintenance requirements there are little or no resources left over for defense. Clearly then, it is imperative that we “take over” as much of the maintenance duties as possible so that the immune system can continue to defend us from infections, trauma and cancer.

Whatever cannot be used for normal metabolic needs of growth, repair, reproduction, building new tissues, or providing energy must be eliminated. If not eliminated, normal metabolic functions cease and sickness and death result.

Why is it true that every 38 seconds an American has a heart attack? Why is it that 1 out of every 2 men and 1 out of every 2.5 women get cancer in their lifetimes? How is that we no longer have a standard of true health but rather standards based upon varying degrees of ill health? If you stand on any street corner or in any shopping mall and view those passing by, you can not help but realize that we have become an army of sick men, women and children mesmerized and addicted to taste treats, electronic input, and minds full of information regarding which celebrity is dating the other.

We regard someone as ‘well’ if they can walk after being bedridden for a month and “back to being healthy” if they can walk a few blocks. When your doctor has your blood drawn by a laboratory or sends a sample of your blood to a laboratory, the results are compared to the “normal” blood reference ranges derived from an unhealthy population of people. So please understand that when your doctor says, “you’re blood tests are normal, you are OK”, it simply means that a condition has not been identified for which to prescribed a drug. Remember, normal Americans have heart attacks every 38 second and half of them get cancer. So who wants to be normal? “I don’t understand it, he went to the doctor on Friday and everything was OK”, is a common statement made by widows at funerals.

Our culture fosters disease and weakness of both mind and body! Rather than prepare us for a life full of health and joy, our culture devotes an incredible amount of its resources to “caring” for the inevitable growing number of invalids and disease ridden children, teenagers and adults. In fact, we are so convinced that disease is inevitable and that health is impossible that we scramble to purchase “health insurance” because we “know” that we will get sick! The truth is that we do not purchase “health insurance” any more than we purchase “life insurance”; we purchase disease and death insurance!

What has happened to us is simple. We have lost our way! We have forgotten that our bodies are products of Nature and as such, are subject to the laws of Nature. The fundamental law which governs the physical universe (Nature) is the law of cause and effect. It is inescapable! Natural laws, unlike human laws, are non-negotiable. Step off of a building and you will fall at 32 feet per second-squared and there is no negotiating. If you plant an apple seed, you can not negotiate an orange tree.

By living according to the laws which govern our biology, we reap the consequences of exuberant health.

By violating these laws, we reap the consequences of disease and misery.

A major consequence of having ‘lost our way’ is that we have lost our connection with Nature. Animals are “plugged” into the wisdom of Nature by a mechanism known as instinct and therefore do not need to learn what, when and how much to eat. Having ‘traded’ our minds for our instincts, we now eat only to pleasure our tongues, not to nourish our bodies. Each culture has a distinct cuisine which is an essential aspect of that culture’s unique identity. Cuisine is nothing more than specific ways of pleasuring tongues. Our appetites therefore, vary from live monkey brain to insects to bull testicles to pasta to fruit all depending upon where we were raised.

In order to understand the laws which govern our biology, we need to understand first of all that we are mammals. Mammals can be sub classified or further distinguished by the structure and function of their respective bodies, that is their anatomy and physiology. The group to which we have been assigned by biologists based upon anatomy and physiology includes elephants, rhinoceroses, horses, and gorillas. This group has horizontally as well as vertically moving jaws, full cheeks and lips, alkaline saliva, long and convoluted intestines, sweats rather than pants and many other biochemical differences including amount and types of enzymes and pH differences in many organs. This group has been designed by nature for a plant based diet.

Carnivores and scavengers (hyenas and jackals) have been designed quite differently in order to eat animals. Unlike carnivores, hyenas and jackals prefer to eat the remains of the animal as do humans. True scavengers however, having instinct, won’t eat the remains after 48 hours or so. We humans however don’t like to eat rigid corpses so we allow them to soften through a process known as decay for several days. Decay is an unpalatable term so we refer to the process as “aging”.

Close to all of the usable energy on this planet comes from the sun. Plants capture that energy and convert it to forms that are usable by animals. The animals then eat the leaves, stems, fruit, seeds and nuts. Some animals eat the animals that eat the plants. But at each step, as energy is transferred from sun to plant and plant to animal and animal to animal, energy is lost. Clearly, one of the most important reasons that we eat is to obtain energy. Now consider how much energy can be derived from a corpse! Can we eat dead animals? Sure! We can also smoke cigarettes, take narcotics and drink alcohol but we certainly will not achieve optimal functioning and in time we will develop chronic, degenerative diseases.

If you continue planting apple seeds, don’t be surprised when you find an apple tree growing in your yard.

When we evaluate the health and dietary records of countries where animal carcasses make up only a small proportion of the diet, we find that heart disease and cancer are not commonly found. On the other hand, when we evaluate the health and dietary records of countries where animal carcasses make up a moderate to large proportion of the diet, we find that heart disease and cancer are the number one and two most common diseases and causes of premature death.

There are several other very important concepts needed to be understood in order to eat according to our ‘nature’ as human beings’ however eliminating corpses, by products and excretions of animals is the first and most important step along that journey.

The implicit relationship between most doctors and patients is described in the following scenario. A patient sits down across the desk from a physician and says, “hey doc, here’s my disease, fix it…” Although this is obviously irrational, it is so pervasive that not only conventional but alternative physicians, as well, willingly take on this impossible role. It is especially true in the case of cancer where the person must be an active participant in the healing process.Cancer is not “the enemy” but rather the consequence of continued violations of natural laws. Because we live in an artificial environment and interact with machines rather than nature, we have all but forgotten that our bodies are subject to natural laws. Natural laws, unlike human laws, are non-negotiable. Just as surely as the planting of an apple seed will not yield an orange tree; continued violations of the laws which govern our biology will not yield a healthy outcome. Health is the optimal functioning of an organism. Health is not, as it is commonly defined, the absence of disease. That would be like saying that “light” is the absence of “darkness”. Health is the consequence of healthy living! Any plan for the restoration of health that is not based upon the laws of nature is destined not only to fail but to disappoint all who follow it.

The immune system has two broad functions. It is the “department of defense” and the “department of maintenance”. When overwhelmed by maintenance requirements (cleaning/repair), the immune system has too few resources left for defense hence, the development of infections, degenerative diseases, and cancer.

A comprehensive approach to cancer must include the following:

The person must learn how to stop making cancer.

Cancer must be selectively targeted and destroyed without destroying the body.

The immune system must be balanced and enhanced.

In order for the body to cease being a medium in which cancer flourishes, metabolic wastes must be removed through cleansing the colon, skin and internal organs. Furthermore, it is imperative that the nourishment taken by the individual be guided by natural laws and not emotions or deleterious habits. Under these circumstances, one will choose fresh, organic and nutrient dense foods that have not been damaged by processing or other destructive methods.

There are several modalities by which the cancer can be selectively targeted without destroying the host:

Insulin Potentiation Therapy

High dose intravenous vitamin C

Poly MVA

Botanicals

Homeopathy

Enhancing immune function can be accomplished with the use of certain botanicals, cleansing, exercise, appropriate nutrition, fasting and oxidative therapies, i.e. ozone.

The relationships between healers and those seeking health are sacred. These relationships define the “soil” in which health can emerge and blossom. In conventional medical circles, the relationship between doctor and patient involves the patient “handing over” to the physician their “disease” and hence the responsibility for its resolution. This implicit contract is doomed to failure since it is based upon fallacious reasoning and false premises. If, on the other hand, the patient is asked to step out of the “quagmire of disease” and commit to undertaking the journey towards health, healing will begin.

The power to heal resides within living organisms and not in things that are extrinsic to them. Healing is an integral and continuous function of living. We need only to restore those conditions necessary for the natural laws to function unimpeded and healing will prevail over destructive influences.
